You may have heard that couples who pray together stay together. You know the importance of praying together as a couple, but you need help. Where do you start What if the words don’t come Is there a right or wrong way to pray? How can I personally pray for our relationship?

If you are interested in praying together or about your relationship, here is a simple prayer for you and your spouse that can help fuel your prayer life. We have also included special prayers for couples who face life’s challenges together.

A prayer for couples

Lord, we come to You today because we just want to pray together regularly. We know we need to be a role model to our (family, children, others), but we want to do the same for ourselves. We’re not sure how to start. First of all, help us understand the importance of common prayer. You said where two or three come together in your name, you are right with them. So we come together in your name and ask you to meet us.

Teach us to be as disciplined in common prayer as in other areas. Our spiritual life needs discipline, just as our bodies need help with healthy eating and exercise. And two are always better than one to ensure success.

Help us give each other encouragement and schedule one or more times to pray together as a couple. When we need to get up earlier, stay up late, start eating or bedtime – help us figure out what works best for us. Even if it is necessary to set a regular “date” or appointment on the calendar to institute prayer as a priority and habit, we are ready to do so.

Lord, you promised to meet all of our needs, but sometimes we don’t even know what our needs are. Help us open up with you and with one another as we look to your word for prayers together. Save us from distractions like excessive television, social media, work, or anything else that could steal our time and commitment to common prayer.

We want to pray together for our family, for friends and for our world. We ask you to teach us how to pray – not just “Bless us” and “Give us”, but really how to talk to you as friends and as our Father, focus on yourself and get to know you better than as well as among each other. Help us not to feel ashamed if we take turns praying and not to care what words we say or what it sounds like. You love sincere and submissive hearts, and so let us pray together.

Forgive us for having kept other things from praying together in the past. Help us to be one in our desire to honor you and to establish honest communication between the two of us so that hidden sins do not interfere with our prayers. Teach us how to intentionally keep our marriage at all times. We recognize that neglect in any area will affect both our desire and our effectiveness in praying together.

We would like to get to know you and make the wishes of your heart ours. Teach us to pray as you will and patiently wait for your answers. Thank you for your sacrificial death, which enables us to courageously come to your throne and find help and grace for every need we have.

Put strong Christians in the way to help us in our prayer life and to hold us accountable so that we can become strong in our own marriage. You are our Heavenly Father and you love us like your children. Today we come to you and express our desire to pray together. Bless us as we strive to keep this promise every day of our lives.

In Jesus name, amen

A prayer for peace in our relationship

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for leading me on the path to eternal love, peace and joy. Sometimes I allow my circumstances to steal my peace, which affects my marriage and other relationships in my life. When that happens, I pray that you will explore my heart and begin to renew me from within. I turn my eyes to you once more, Lord, as I take steps toward the peace I know is possible.

I will not let life’s daily frustrations create divisions in my relationships. Even in the most uncertain times, I can hold on to your promises for my life and my loved ones. Remind me to keep you at the center of my heart and home at all times so that my relationships will honor you.

If I feel like I’ve been wronged in a relationship, help me find ways to work on my own thoughts and attitudes. Make me a better person through Your precious Holy Spirit. Guide me in the truth of your ways and keep me on the way to peace. Amen. – Kristine Brown

Prayer to trust God

Heavenly Father, thank you for being fully worthy of our trust. As my spouse and I make a commitment to be trustworthy of one another, you empower us by your spirit. Grant us grace when we fail. Prayer for a dating couple

Precious Heavenly Father, when I am with someone it is often difficult to tell what is going on in their heart. Please help me get to know my partner better, so that when I meet, I have a clear idea of whether this is the person. I don’t know your heart, but I know you do (1 Sam 16: 7). Please know that I am looking for you and your righteousness first and foremost (Mt 6:33) including the person I am with, but the truth is, I cannot know what they are like in their heart, so help You are telling me if that person you know is a good partner for life.

Help me not to rush because I might regret it if, once we are married and the real person is revealed, we are bound to them for a lifetime. How important it is to know who to marry and how hard it is to see what’s in a person, so I really need your help Lord. Make it clear to me that I am with the right person or make it clear that it is not me and whether I should go ahead because I know that you know them better than me and obviously know what is for me and on behalf of the best is before all names i pray jesus christ. Amen. – Jack Wellman

For true love

We pray that our lives will be filled and flooded with the power of your love so that we can make a difference in this world and do you honor. We ask for your help to remind us that the most important things are not what we do outwardly, it is not based on any talents or gifts, but the most important thing we can do in this life is just you to love and love others.

Help us love as you love. Fill us with your spirit so that we can choose the best. We are weak Lord, but we also know that you are strong in us even when we are weak. Thanks that it’s not up to us. Heavenly Lord, thank you for the differences you put together to make our marriage strong. Help us to respect, appreciate and affirm these unique qualities more every day. Amen.

10 tips for praying as a couple

If you have not yet experienced praying as a couple, these suggestions will help you get started (excerpt from Praying as a Couple by Janet Thomson):

  • Make praying together a priority in your day.
  • Find a place where you can pray without a break.
  • Find a time that fits your two schedules and write it down on your calendars.
  • If you choose to go in the morning, make yourself comfortable with a cup of coffee or tea.
  • If you choose to go in the evening, pray before you go to bed as you both will likely be exhausted by the end of the day and it will be difficult to stay awake.
  • Take turns praying. If one of you is more comfortable with praying aloud than the other, let that person go ahead and let the other spouse join in or say their own prayer. Or do a conversation prayer where you take turns praying as you speak to one another.
  • Start with short prayers until you get used to praying together.
  • List things you would like to remember to pray about. It’s okay to pray with your eyes open so you can look at your notes.
  • Hold hands or hug while you pray.
  • Remember that prayer is simply a conversation with God. You don’t have to use big theological terms or sound “spiritual”. Just pour your heart out to the only one who can really help.
